YOUNG SAILORS TO INVADE PORT LINCOLN

INTERNATIONAL CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS AT PORT LINCOLN YACHT CLUB

The Port Lincoln Yacht Club will be hosting the International Cadet Championships from the 11th.

January 2009 until the 18th January 2009. It is anticipated that Port Lincoln will probably see over 85 boats racing on

Boston Bay during this regatta. Like the championships that have gone before, this Port Lincoln event will be exciting

and memorable for every young cadet sailor entering along with their supporting families and friends who accompany

them to Port Lincoln. Over 200 young sailors plus parents, friends and support staff will certainly swell the Port

Lincoln population.

The program is as follows.

• Registration & Measurement will take place on the 11th and 12th January before the Opening Ceremony.

• Practice Racing will be on the 12th January pm

• Racing begins in earnest on 13th January, through to the 18th January with Championship heats.

• Friday the 16th January 2009 is reserved for the resail of any 'catch-up races or as a 'Lay day'.

• Championship heats will continue from the 17th until mid afternoon on the18th January.

• Presentation of trophies will be take place on the evening of the 18th January 2009.

The Australian Team to compete at the 2009 International Cadet World Championship in Argentina will be selected at

this Regatta and to be eligible, competitors must be under the age of 18 years on the 31st December 2009. The

number of well thought trophies and prizes will give encouragement to these young sailors who are the ocean going

sailors of tomorrow.

Apart from the major trophy, the Jock Sturrock perpetual Trophy awarded to the outright Australian Champion, many

other trophies and prizes will be awarded.

They are as follows:

• The Mermaid perpetual Trophy for the First Girl Helmsperson.

• The Tillet Team Trophy for the winning State Team.

• First Boy Crew, (The Colin Pratt Perpetual Trophy).

• First Girl Crew, (TAK chemicals perpetual Trophy).

• Harry Richards Perpetual Trophy for the Most Determined.

• First-placed skipper helming their first Nationals events.

• First-placed Skipper under the age of 12.

• First-placed Skipper under the age of 14.

• First-placed Skipper under the age of 16.

• Second to tenth Placed Skipper and Crew on Line Honours.

• First to Third Skipper and Crew on Handicap.

• Race awards in each Event.

• Redlands Trophy for the First Co-Ed Helm and Crew Combination.

There'll be other prizes as determined by the Organising Authority and to encourage more of these budding

champions, it is pointed out that winners of Outright Prizes are precluded from winning Handicap Prizes. Established

in 1931, the Port Lincoln Yacht Club today very much lives by its foundation principle...

“To Foster a Love of the Sea".

Our club is nationally recognised as one of the best country sailing facilities in Australia. In any given year we will host

a couple of national championships, run a comprehensive junior sailing program, Sailability class competitions and

regular weekend racing for dinghies, multi-hulls and keelboats.

Situated on Boston Bay foreshore with stunning bay views, we enjoy sailing and racing on Australia's best natural

harbour. With consistent breezes, Mediterranean style climate, minimal shipping traffic and only an hour's sail to an

aquatic playground of spectacular islands, its no surprise that the Port Lincoln Yacht Club is a 'must include' Port of

call for visiting Yachties from near and far.

Victorian State Championships 2007-2008

This year’s State championships were sailed at Sandringham Yacht Club on Port Phillip Bay over the Labour Day long weekend. I didn’t know how well I was going to go because I had only sailed a few times since the Nationals because of the algae in the Gippsland lakes.

Metung Yacht Club juniors sailing had to be stopped because the algae was said to be harmful.

The first day of the regatta, on Saturday, was very trying because of the there was not much wind and we were not the lightest crew. The wind was about 5 knots but the race committee managed to get two races in. We finished the day in second place just one point behind Anton Sasson in Samaran. He did extremely well considering this was his first year as a skipper.

Sunday was even lighter than Saturday. Most of us got towed out except for me and Joel because I accidently let go of the tow rope and we got left behind.

We started a race but that soon got abandoned because of the lack of wind. This was good because I went left and everyone that went right was miles ahead. After that we drifted around for a bit then got sent in for an early lunch.

After lunch we got only got one race in before the wind died again. At the end of sailing on Sunday I was placed in equal first with Anton, but only just ahead on a countback. Doug Shepard, sailing Stolen Pig, was ahead of both of us but was not able to win the Victorian States because he was from Tasmania.

On Monday the wind was a lot stronger reaching 15 to 20 knots coming from the north. This was better for the heavier skippers and crews and this changed the top end of the fleet. Callum Wilkinson from Geelong won the first and last race of the day and James Short won the second. Henry, my crew, and I finished 2nd, 3rd, 2nd for that day.

Henry has only been crewing with me this season and has done extremely well to have learnt all he has in this short period of time. I couldn’t have sailed so well without him.

It was great to find out at presentation that I had won the State titles after sailing in them for so many years.

I had a great time catching up with some friends and S.Y.C put on a really good regatta.
